Some festivals involve spending four days in a field. Mediterranea Metal Cruise involves waking up and wondering which Greek island is outside your window.

It sounds faintly ridiculous when you first describe it. Take a cruise ship sailing around the Mediterranean, fill part of it with metalheads, put bands on deck and turn the whole thing into a travelling metal festival.

Then you actually do it, and it starts making a surprising amount of sense.

Mediterranea Metal Cruise - or MMC - sits somewhere between a festival, a cruise and a holiday. You have a cabin rather than a tent. During the day, the ship arrives somewhere worth exploring. At night, everybody comes back aboard and the metal takes over.

Festpod discovered that first-hand when we joined MMC.

There’s something wonderfully strange about spending the day exploring a Greek island, returning to the ship, grabbing some food and then watching a metal band playing at sea. Because you’re all living aboard the same ship, you keep encountering the same people too. Festival-goers, musicians and regular cruise passengers share the bars, restaurants and decks.

And because the ship is the festival location, that brings its own quirks. Outdoor stages have wind to contend with, shore excursions have to fit around sailing times and, after several days of sightseeing, bands and late nights, it turns out you can become impressively tired without once dragging a tent through mud.

MMC calls itself a “metal holiday”, and that’s probably the best description. It isn’t about squeezing as many bands as possible into every waking hour. It’s the combination that makes it work - waking up somewhere new, exploring during the day and coming back aboard for a night of metal.

We’ve actually done it, so we’re interested in more than who’s playing. Does it work as a festival? Does it work as a holiday? And what do you need to know before swapping your festival tent for a cabin?

Turns out, there’s something in this whole metal-at-sea idea.

Welcome aboard!
