Defences team up with Skindred’s Benji Webbe on protest anthem ‘More Of Us’
Defences have teamed up with Skindred frontman Benji Webbe for new single ‘More Of Us (Than There Are Of Them)’, a protest track inspired by vocalist Cherry Duesbury’s anger at current politics and what she describes as institutional corruption.
The Hertfordshire alternative metal band released the track through Long Branch Records on 8 September, alongside an official music video. It follows their previous single, ‘Metamorphosis’, released earlier this year.
Duesbury says events in the United States were a major influence on the song. She pointed specifically to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while explaining that members of her immediate family live in a majority-Republican state and that the issue therefore felt particularly close to home.
“I’ve been inspired by the growing feeling that more and more of us are asking ourselves ‘why is this the way things are?’”
Duesbury says the song grew from frustration with political and institutional systems, and from a feeling that people are starting to push back.
“These whispered questions talk of upheaval and, ultimately, rebellion, and this song means to stand as an anthem as those whispers turn into screams.”
Webbe joins Defences after a year that has already seen the band release ‘Metamorphosis’, while their most recent album, ‘Shadowlight’, arrived in November 2024.
Formed in 2014, Defences have previously appeared at festivals including Download, Burn It Down and Takedown.
They’ll return to the stage at Brighton’s Heavy Foundation Fundraiser on the 25th of September, before joining Future Palace for four UK dates in November.
