Feeling adrift? Dive into Strange Company’s ‘Waves’

Ever wondered how you ended up here, with no idea what comes next? Strange Company have been asking the same thing.
The South Wales alt-rock five-piece tackle that feeling on “Waves” - and the chorus nearly ended up saying something else.
Guitarist Owen Weston planned to replace its placeholder lyrics with something more elaborate. The band wanted to keep them. Sometimes the first idea says enough.
The music didn’t stay put, though. Weston had been listening to plenty of Citizen when he wrote the emo-leaning demo, but things changed once the rest of the band got involved.
“Once I took it to the boys, though, every element of the song seemed to get heavier,” he says. His shared love of shoegaze with fellow guitarist Alef Matthews also fed into the sound.
For the video, they headed to Aberavon Beach. There are no shots of the band playing, though. Bassist Josef Lovett says the water and underwater imagery are about struggling and feeling out of your depth. A beach trip, but not exactly a holiday video.
